Central Vietnam Itinerary: Da Nang Base for Hue, Hoi An and More
Da Nang sits at the heart of Central Vietnam, putting Hue, Hoi An, My Son and the Hai Van Pass all within easy day-trip distance. This itinerary covers exactly how to do it, with transport times, current prices and insider tips.

Why Da Nang Is the Perfect Base for Central Vietnam
Da Nang sits almost exactly in the middle of Central Vietnam's greatest hits. Hoi An is 30 km south. Hue is 100 km north. My Son Sanctuary is 70 km southwest. The Hai Van Pass cuts right through the mountains on the road to Hue. Every one of these is reachable as a day trip, meaning you unpack once and explore everything from a single comfortable base.

Vietnam Itinerary Overview: How Many Days Do You Need?
For a focused Central Vietnam trip using Da Nang as base, five to seven days is the sweet spot.
| Day | Destination | Travel Time from Da Nang | |-----|-------------|-------------------------| | 1 | Da Nang city orientation | 0 | | 2 | Hoi An Ancient Town | 40 to 50 min by bus or car | | 3 | My Son Sanctuary | 1.5 hrs by car or tour | | 4 | Hai Van Pass and Hue | 2.5 hrs by train or road | | 5 | Hue full day | Based in Hue or return same day | | 6 | Marble Mountains and beach | 30 min south of Da Nang | | 7 | Buffer or Ba Na Hills | 45 min west of Da Nang |
If you only have three days, pick two: Hoi An plus Hue is the classic pairing.
Day 1: Get Your Bearings in Da Nang
Land, settle in and spend your first afternoon walking the city. The Han River waterfront is the spine of central Da Nang. Cross the Dragon Bridge on foot in the evening and check the weekend fire show schedule (Saturday and Sunday at 9 pm).
For breakfast, head to Quán Bún Bò Huế Cô My in An Hai for the city's best bowl of bun bo Hue. Expect to pay around 40,000 to 55,000 VND as of November 2026. Confirm current prices locally.
In the afternoon, visit the Cham Museum of Sculpture on Trung Nu Vuong Street, one of the most underrated museums in Vietnam. Entry is around 60,000 VND as of November 2026.
In the evening, browse Danang Central Market in Hai Chau for a feel of everyday local life, cheap street food and fresh produce. It is busiest in the early morning but lively until around 8 pm.
Day 2: Hoi An Ancient Town
Getting There
The simplest option is the Da Nang to Hoi An bus (around 25,000 to 30,000 VND, 40 to 50 minutes). Grab taxis run around 200,000 to 300,000 VND each way. Many visitors hire a private car for the day (roughly 600,000 to 900,000 VND return including waiting time) to stop at Non Nuoc Beach or the Marble Mountains on the way back.
What to Do
- Walk the Ancient Town from the Japanese Covered Bridge to Hoi An Market
- Buy a combined Old Town ticket: around 120,000 VND as of November 2026. Covers entry to five heritage sites. Confirm at the ticket booths on Le Loi Street.
- Eat cao lau at any market stall in the covered food hall for around 35,000 to 50,000 VND
- Join an evening lantern boat ride on the Thu Bon River (around 100,000 to 150,000 VND per person)
Insider Tips
- Arrive before 9 am to beat the tour groups
- The streets away from the river (An Bang side) are quieter and have better coffee shops
- Bicycle rental inside Hoi An costs around 50,000 VND per day and is the best way to explore
Day 3: My Son Sanctuary
My Son is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with 4th to 13th century Cham Hindu temples set inside a jungle valley. It is less visited than Hoi An but genuinely impressive.
Getting There
There is no direct public bus. Most people take a group tour from Da Nang (around 250,000 to 400,000 VND per person including transport and guide, as of November 2026) or hire a private driver. The drive takes about 1.5 hours.
Entry and Timings
- Entry fee: around 150,000 VND per adult as of November 2026. Confirm locally.
- Open: approximately 6 am to 5 pm daily
- Allow two to three hours on site
- Traditional Cham dance performances are held inside the ruins at roughly 9:30 am and 10:30 am. Check current schedule at the gate.
Tips
- Wear light clothes and bring insect repellent. The jungle humidity is real.
- Combine with a stop at the Marble Mountains on the return journey for an efficient day.
Day 4: Hai Van Pass and Hue
This is the most scenic day of any Central Vietnam itinerary. The Hai Van Pass is a 21-km mountain road that crests at 496 m above sea level with views over both Da Nang Bay to the south and Lang Co Lagoon to the north.
How to Cross the Hai Van Pass
| Option | Cost | Time | Notes | |--------|------|------|-------| | Motorbike (self-drive) | Fuel only | 45 to 60 min over the pass | Best experience, requires license | | Hired motorbike driver | 300,000 to 500,000 VND | 1 to 1.5 hrs | Easy Rider style | | Private car | 800,000 to 1,200,000 VND for the day | 1 hr over pass | Most comfortable | | Train (Da Nang to Hue) | 75,000 to 200,000 VND | 2.5 hrs | Scenic coast route, no pass stop |
If you cross the pass by road, stop at the old French and American military fort at the summit. The views are outstanding. On the northern descent, pause at Nam O Fishing Village on the Da Nang side, or continue to Lang Co for a seafood lunch.
For a side stop en route, Suoi Luong Hai Van Park is a forest park near the summit with picnic spots and a small waterfall, popular with local families on weekends.
Hue: What to See
- The Imperial Citadel (Dai Noi): around 200,000 VND as of November 2026
- Royal Tombs of Minh Mang, Khai Dinh or Tu Duc: 100,000 to 150,000 VND each
- Thien Mu Pagoda: free, on the Perfume River
- Dong Ba Market: free to browse, excellent for local snacks and banh mi
The train back to Da Nang departs Hue station regularly. The ride hugs the coast and takes about 2.5 hours. Book ahead on the Vietnam Railways website or at the station.
Day 5: Full Day in Hue (Optional Overnight)
If you stayed overnight in Hue, spend the morning on a Perfume River boat cruise (around 150,000 to 250,000 VND for two to three hours as of November 2026). This covers the pagodas and tombs along the riverbank at a relaxed pace.
For lunch, eat bun bo Hue from a street stall near Dong Ba Market. Hue is the birthplace of the dish so the versions here are notably better than elsewhere.
Day 6: Marble Mountains and the Beach
The Marble Mountains (Ngu Hanh Son) are five limestone peaks 9 km south of central Da Nang. The main peak, Thuy Son, has two cave pagodas, a war-era hospital cave and a lift to the summit viewpoint.
- Entry: around 40,000 VND (stairs) or 15,000 VND for the elevator, as of November 2026
- Allow one to two hours
Combine with an afternoon at My Khe Beach, the main public beach in Da Nang. Sunbeds and umbrellas cost around 30,000 to 50,000 VND each at the beach shack operators along the central stretch.
For a seafood dinner, My Hanh Seafood in An Hai is a solid local-favourite option. Budget around 300,000 to 500,000 VND per person with drinks.
Practical Notes for Your Central Vietnam Itinerary
Best Time to Visit
March to May and September to October offer the most reliable weather across the whole region. November to February is the rainy season in Central Vietnam. Expect afternoon showers and occasionally rough seas. Cultural sites in Hue and Hoi An are still very enjoyable in the rain, and prices drop significantly. Accommodation that costs 800,000 VND in peak season can fall to 300,000 to 400,000 VND in the wet months as of November 2026.
Getting Around Da Nang
Grab is reliable, transparent on pricing and widely used. For the city itself, most rides cost under 50,000 VND. For day trips, either book a private car through your hotel or a reputable tour operator, or use the bus for Hoi An.

Quick answers
- How many days do you need for a Central Vietnam itinerary?
- Five to seven days using Da Nang as a base covers the main highlights comfortably. That gives you a full day each for Hoi An, Hue and My Son Sanctuary, plus time for the Hai Van Pass crossing and a day or two in Da Nang itself. Three days works if you focus on Hoi An and Hue only.
- What is the best way to get from Da Nang to Hue?
- The train is the most popular option. It takes about 2.5 hours, costs 75,000 to 200,000 VND depending on class as of November 2026, and follows a scenic coastal route past Lang Co Lagoon. A private car over the Hai Van Pass takes longer but offers mountain views and stops along the way.
- How do you get from Da Nang to Hoi An?
- The local bus runs regularly between Da Nang and Hoi An, costs around 25,000 to 30,000 VND and takes 40 to 50 minutes as of November 2026. Grab taxis are faster and cost 200,000 to 300,000 VND one way. Hiring a private car for the day is convenient if you want to stop at the Marble Mountains en route.
- Is My Son Sanctuary worth visiting from Da Nang?
- Yes, especially if you are interested in Cham history or want to see a less-crowded UNESCO site. The drive takes about 1.5 hours each way. Entry is around 150,000 VND as of November 2026. Most visitors book a guided group tour from Da Nang for 250,000 to 400,000 VND including transport.
- Can you do the Hai Van Pass as a day trip from Da Nang?
- Yes. The pass is only about 30 km north of Da Nang. You can cross it by motorbike, hired driver or private car on the way to Hue, or do a shorter loop just to the summit and back in a morning. Allow at least 45 minutes at the top for the views and the old fort.
- What is the best time of year for a Central Vietnam itinerary?
- March to May is generally the best window across the whole region, with dry weather in both Da Nang and Hue. September to October is also good. November to February is the rainy season in Central Vietnam, with frequent showers, but prices drop considerably and cultural sites in Hue and Hoi An are still very enjoyable.
- Do you need a guide for My Son Sanctuary?
- You do not need one, but a guide adds significant context to the ruins. Most group tours from Da Nang include an English-speaking guide. If you visit independently, the site sells a basic map at the entrance and there are information boards at each temple group.
